CALAIS

one of the most exciting moko panel designs was inspired by calais, the town on the narrowest point of the english channel – just opposite dover. the highlighted part is not mentioned in the original, i just think it’s a nice parallel between the “opposite” panels and the opposite towns. the curving hollows seem to diverge at first sight, suggesting differentness and separation, but after a few imaginary twists we can get a perfect circle and arrive at unity. this unity and spirit of cohesion characterized the 14th century burghers of calais as well, whose heroic self-sacrifice was immortalized in the famous rodin statue.
